How was the book originally published? Is it currently in a reprint form?

The authors originally published the book as a series of 7 booklets in 1959, with little commercial success. In 1982, a new edition with the original booklets. Then, in 2009 and 2015, a facsimile edition with a new introduction by Gerry Badger, and another version in 2018 in a slightly reduced format. Here's the link to the publisher's website for the 2009 edition: https://www.pierrevonkleist.com/products/lisboa-cidade-triste-e-alegre

Some bookshops might still have copies of the 2018 version.

Hello Pierre. I am happy to discover something that represent the real Lisbon, as Lisbon is often portrayed as an idyllic paradise, a place filled only with light, while ignoring the darkness that inevitably comes with its history and heritage of poverty and dictatorship.

Glad you enjoyed reading, Ana. And, yes, there are many layers to the city.

What an interesting read. I loved to learn about their collaboration since I am exploring that theme myself.

And I love that poem about Lisbon. One day, I would love to visit.

Pierre, I love this! Thank you for introducing me to this book. What an achievement during that time to create it, considering quality alone. The photos have a way of showing something so hard to describe. I'm bilingual in Spanish with a background in romance languages and linguistics so, with a little bit of Portuguese under my belt, I was able to watch the film and understand a bit. I also love the pace of the documentary. I've been wanting to visit Portugal since before the pandemic and hope to finally make it there next year. I can't wait to experience what it's like to walk the streets!
