I was working on a different post which requires more work. Instead, today’s issue is mostly images from a recent work trip to Moldova.
The Internet had warned me against Chisinau, which was depicted as the least visited city of Europe, and the least visit-able one too… I only had time for a couple of walks around the centre and what i could see were quiet streets, people reading or working in the many lovely coffee places, a cross-generational dancing event in the park, people going about their day, bookshops and stores where you could buy fruit-branded tech devices, people chatting with friends, a few shy cats, and students joyfully celebrating graduation — glimpses of a lively, peaceful European town.
The country is poor and engaged in a complex transition towards democracy and EU membership. Moldova is a small territory between Romania and Ukraine (Odessa is a two and a half-hour drive from Chisinau). The war is close but you would not guess it from the atmosphere in the streets.
A pause for hopes of peace.
Summer is hot in Chisinau. On the cloudy day during my short stay, temperatures cooled down to about 25 degrees at midday. My time with the camera was limited and I do not speak the languages (Romanian and Russian). It was clear that the images would not be about addressing any issue or presenting a detailed account of the place. These photos are simply the result of walking around in a first approach to an unknown place. Just being open-minded and intensely curious.
So here goes: just a few things i saw.
That’s all for now, folks. I’ll be back in your inbox soon.
